Portuguese Nationality Process Tracker – April 2026

As of April 2026, Martins Castro continues to closely monitor Portuguese nationality applications, which are still facing long processing times and uneven progress across the Lisbon and Porto registry offices. The information shared reflects the latest updates provided by the registries and corresponds to the submission dates of the applications currently under review.

Lisbon Central Registry (updated March 2026)

Children of Portuguese Citizens (Art. 1, C – Registration of Birth):

  • Adults: second half of February 2022
  • Minors: second half of June 2025

Children of Portuguese Citizens (Art. 1, C – Direct Registration):

  • Adults: second half of October 2023
  • Minors: first half of November 2025

Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens (Art. 1, D):

  • Adults: second half of January 2022
  • Minors: first half of January 2025

Minor Children of Naturalized Portuguese Citizens (Art. 2):

  • First half of September 2022

Spouses (Art. 3.3):

  • Second half of February 2026

Sephardic Applicants (Art. 6, 7):

  • First half of May 2021

Porto Registry Office (updated February 2026)

Children of Portuguese Citizens – Birth Registration (Art. 1, C):

  • Adults: second half of January 2025
  • Minors: first half of July 2025

Children of Portuguese Citizens – Direct Registration (Art. 1, C):

  • Adults: first half of January 2026
  • Minors: first half of January 2026

Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens (Art. 1, D):

  • Adults: second half of December 2021
  • Minors: first half of January 2026

Sephardic Applicants (Art. 6, 7):

  • Second half of May 2022

Other Registry Offices in Portugal

In addition to the main registries in Lisbon and Porto, other registry offices across Portugal may also be reviewing nationality applications, depending on case distribution by IRN.

Important to know: Unlike the Central Registry Office in Lisbon, the Porto Registry Office does not have jurisdiction over all types of nationality applications. Its scope is limited to specific cases, such as children and grandchildren of Portuguese citizens, as well as Sephardic applicants.
