MILENNIUM: Portugal opens the door to NL due to sephardic heritage

Not only does Spain open the door to the Nuevoleonese with a Sephardic past, but the government of Portugal can also grant the nationality with a series of procedures more accessible to the applicant.

Esto gracias a la Ley Portuguesa de Reparación, issued in 2015, with which the north of Mexico takes on greater relevance for the past of its inhabitants.

Unlike the historic reparation law enacted by Spain in 2015, the Portuguese procedure is simpler for the applicant, as it exempts the condition of traveling to the European country.

The legal buffet Martins Castro, headquartered in Lisbon but with an office in Mexico, offered an informative talk at a hotel near the city to make the issue known.

A la charla attended little more than 300 people, interested in knowing the process.

The process begins with a genealogical report, which a qualified historian can do; continues with the verification in the Israeli Community of Lisbon or Porto, culminating in the Ministry of Justice of Portugal.

It is estimated that the procedure takes around 20 months in its three phases, with a cost of 750 euros with the Portuguese government, plus the fees of the legal team.

“In Portugal we have listened to a lot of the regions, we want to know about their history and that is why we are here”, said the lawyer of the firm Renato Martins.

The request

Los sefardíes fueron aquellos ciudadanos de la península Ibérica, quienes los practicantes de la religión judía llegaron a la Nueva España huyendo de la Inquisición.

It is estimated that there is an important number of citizens with Sephardic ancestry in northern Mexico.

Víctor Castillo, a genealogist based in Seattle United States, explained that proving this past requires a study and investigation and not only can be guided by the last names of people.

“It's simple to check this aunque not easy. If you have to prove that your ancestor was prosecuted by the Portuguese or Spanish Inquisition, something we can know from the archives”, reconoció.
For his part, Renato Martins commented that the legal department he represents is starting to receive requests from residents of the region.

If I indicate that the representatives will be up until Sunday in Monterrey to offer advice to those interested, who can consult the page martincastro.pt, or call (0155) 2732 2159.
