The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo asked the Constitutional Court to review the regulations and restrictions added to the law of citizenship.
The Portuguese president, Marcelo Rebelo, issued a special decree at the end of the week that vetoes the implementation of a new law designed to make it difficult for Israeli descendants to obtain Portuguese citizenship.
In the order published by Rebelo, and in reference to Sephardic descendants at a global level who could have right to the citizenry, including those kidnapped in the power of Hamas, he informed: «Creating additional obstacles to the concession of the Portuguese citizenry can be considered a violation of the principle of human dignity and the right to life”.

The president's order is the product of a letter sent by Isabel Comte, an expert in the rights of citizens who works at the Martins Castro lawyer firm, where she requested to review the changes in the Law of Nationality, since the last adjustments would imply that the descendants Sefardíes tend to live three years in Portugal before having the right to restore their status as Portuguese nationals.
The new regime, which adds criteria for the granting of nationality, is considered violative of the principle of protection of trust and of the prohibition of retroactivity of restrictive norms of rights, freedoms and guarantees, as indicated in a request sent to the Constitutional Court The 22nd of January and published this month on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.
