Delays at the Registry Office: it’s time to act collectively

The prolonged wait for Portuguese nationality has affected thousands of people around the world. Families who share emotional and historical ties with Portugal continue to wait for a legitimate right, while cases pile up in the Registry Offices with no clear prospect of resolution.
Faced with this scenario of inertia, Martins Castro took a step forward: we started a collective petition, now available on the Portuguese parliament website, with the aim of directly putting pressure on the authorities responsible for analyzing nationality applications.
Isabel Comte, a lawyer at Martins Castro and a specialist in Portuguese nationality for over 20 years, highlights: “The code of administrative procedure applicable to any and all requests made to the Administration establishes a period of 90 working days for a decision to be made on any request, in particular requests for nationality”.

The strength of unity
The petition is more than a legal document: it is a democratic tool for legitimate pressure. When thousands unite for a cause, the message becomes impossible to ignore.. Signing this petition is declaring that the right to Portuguese nationality cannot be treated with disregard.
This is the right time
Portugal is preparing for new legislative elections in May. This political scenario creates a strategic window to ensure that our demands gain visibility and are considered in the decisions of the next government. Mobilization can now generate real impact.
Who can participate?
Any person of legal age who is interested in Portuguese nationality — whether because they have already obtained it, wish to obtain it, or know someone who is seeking this right — can and should sign. It is not necessary to have an ongoing process, just to be over 18 years old. The movement is by the community, for the community.
No cost, no risk. Just active citizenship.
Signing the petition does not create any legal burden or implications. It is every citizen's right to demonstrate in favor of a just and urgent cause.
