Registry offices receive reinforcements, but face historic high in demand for Portuguese nationality
Since the Portuguese government announced a set of proposals on June 19 to tighten the rules of the Nationality Law, thousands of people have sought to speed up their citizenship applications. The volume of in-person and online applications has increased dramatically, generating a rush to registry offices. To contain the overload, the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) has reinforced the teams in the main offices in the country.
However, the effort is still timid in the face of pressure:
- More than 700 thousand requests for nationality remain pending throughout the country.
- The Porto Central Archives temporarily suspended in-person service to prioritize orders sent by mail and online.
- The IRN operates 18 service counters in Portugal, but those of Lisbon and Porto concentrate the highest demand.
- The emergency reinforcement included 4 new technical assistants in Lisbon and 7 in Porto.
- The measures seek to speed up the analysis of the processes received before the new rules come into force.
Portuguese authorities recommend that applicants avoid spontaneous service and prioritize non-face-to-face channels, such as sending applications by mail and submitting applications online. Using the helpline and the digital status check are also alternatives to avoid unnecessary queues and travel. Read the full article on here.
There is still time to guarantee your right to Portuguese nationality
With the new rules already in process, every day counts. Submit your application before the law changes and avoid stricter residency requirements and additional criteria.
