Portuguese Nationality: proposal may change deadlines for naturalization

The idea will be considered in Parliament in September and involves important changes to deadlines and requirements of naturalization. Possible changes in the law show that the scenario is constantly changing and that waiting may mean facing tougher rules in the future. Read the full article on here.
Currently, the law requires five years of legal residence in Portugal for a foreigner to apply for nationality through naturalization. The “Immigration Consensus” think tank suggests that this period be six years, accompanied by additional requirements, such as:
- Proof of sufficient knowledge of Portuguese language;
- Assessment of the civic and democratic principles of the country;
- Introduction of a national test for those over 18, similar to what already happens in countries like the United Kingdom and Spain.
The difference to the Government's proposal
While the group advocates six years as a balanced term, the Government's proposal is more restrictive:
- 7 years for citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries;
- 10 years for other immigrants.
According to experts, this separation violates principles of equality and non-discrimination.
Why does this matter for immigrants and families?
For those who already live in Portugal, these changes may represent:
- Longer waiting time to acquire nationality;
- New demands for cultural and linguistic integration;
- Need to plan in advance the transfer of nationality to children and spouses.
Furthermore, the debate shows that the law may continue to undergo revisions, which reinforces the importance of start processes as soon as possible.
Future prospects
The group also proposes:
- Strengthening of Institute of Registries and Notaries to speed up processes;
- Wider range of courses available Portuguese language for immigrants;
- Annual publication of official reports on nationality applications to increase transparency.
There is still time to apply for Portuguese nationality!
