New law makes it easier for Brazilians to enter Portugal: an opportunity for those seeking nationality

On February 14, 2025, an important change to the Foreigners Law came into effect in Portugal, facilitating the entry and stay of Brazilians in the country. The change was sanctioned by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and approved by the Assembly of the Republic. With this new legislation, Brazilian citizens have simpler conditions to enter Portugal and apply for a visa. residence permit if they decide to study or work in the country.
What changes for Brazilians
Now, the Brazilians can apply for a residence permit directly in Portugal, without needing a visa to enter, which makes the process significantly faster and more accessible. This change also applies to citizens of East Timor, while for other countries in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), such as Angola and Mozambique, an entry visa requirement remains.
In addition, CPLP citizens who have been authorized to live in Portugal receive residence cards valid for two years, accepted throughout the European Union (EU). This measure, which has already benefited more than 147 thousand Brazilians in 2023, is part of an ongoing effort to facilitate the mobility and integration of Portuguese-speaking citizens in Europe.
