New Portuguese citizen? Find out how to issue your identity document.

In recent weeks, many nationality processes have been completed, resulting in hundreds of Martins Castro customers now officially Portuguese. However, some of these new citizens have faced setbacks when issuing their essential documents, such as the Citizen Card.
A recurring issue, however, that has caused some inconvenience in issuing the Citizen Card: The new birth registration model often presents the full name (first and last name) sequentially in the name-only field, thus leaving the last name field empty. This inadequate formatting has led several consular sections to request that citizens correct their birth records in order to avoid confusion and ensure the correct issuance of official documents.
What to do?
When applying for a Citizen Card for the first time, it is important to check whether the name is correct and also to ensure that it only contains the name of the country, rather than providing complete information about the applicant's birthplace. If any of these errors occur, immediately ask to fill in additional data directly on site.
Remember how to request the document
- Gather the necessary documentation: Make sure you have all the required documents on hand, such as your birth certificate and a valid identification document. In certain cases, it may be necessary to present additional documents, such as proof of residence or civil status certificates.
- Visit the appropriate location: Go to a Citizen's Store, registry office or consular section with the documents. There is no need to fill out forms, but all documents must be presented to the attendant.
- Confirm details: The employee will check your documents to ensure all information is correct, especially name, surname and place of birth. Check that everything matches your birth record.
- Wait for the card to be issued: After the documents have been verified and your application processed, you will receive information about when and where to collect the Citizen Card.
By following these steps and paying special attention to scheduling conditions, you can simplify the process of requesting your Citizen Card, avoiding setbacks and ensuring that everything is handled efficiently.
