The most popular destinations in Portugal for tourists from the USA

In the first half of 2024, North American tourists stood out as one of the most relevant source markets for tourism in Portugal. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), these cities continue to attract tourists due to their cultural, historical and gastronomic diversity, in addition to their striking landscapes.
Top 3 most visited destinations by non-resident US tourists:
1 – Ponta Delgada – 18.2% of stays
2 – Lisbon – 16.3%
3 – Port – 14.3%
The tourist accommodation sector in Portugal registered growth of 4.5% in the first half of 2024, reaching 35.5 million stays, driven mainly by the increase of 5.8% in stays by non-residents.
This positive performance reflects Portugal’s strengthening as a global destination of excellence. The municipalities that stand out the most are:
1- Lisbon – 21.2% of total stays
2 – Albufeira – 9.1%
3 – Funchal – 8.5%
Significant growth in key municipalities such as Lisbon and Albufeira contributed to the increase in total revenues, which reached €2.8 million in the period. Continued growth positions Portugal as a priority destination for travelers from different markets.
