Portugal and Colombia establish economic partnership for the production of Colombian passports
The recent partnership between Portugal and Colombia is generating great expectations and opening new doors for the strengthening of economic relations between the two countries. But do you know why this agreement is so important? Let's understand better how this collaboration promises to transform the production of Colombian passports and, at the same time, drive sustainable growth and innovation.
How did this partnership begin?
It all started with the signing of a strategic agreement in 2024, when Portugal’s National Mint (INCM) was chosen to take over the production of Colombian passports. This decision came after a successful bidding process, where INCM’s expertise, technical capacity and international recognition stood out.
The contract, signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Luis Gilberto Murillo, and the Portuguese ambassador to Colombia, Catarina de Mendoza, will last for 10 years, starting on September 1, 2025. And there's more: the agreement also provides for the construction of a printing plant in Colombia, ensuring the local production of documents with efficiency and security.
Much more than passports
This agreement goes beyond simply producing passports. It also covers the issuance of travel documents and visas, as well as promoting the training of the government agency Migration Colombia. This means that Portugal is not only providing technology, but also sharing knowledge and best practices, strengthening Colombian infrastructure.
This knowledge transfer process is essential for the modernization of public services in Colombia, providing greater agility and security in the issuance of official documents — a direct benefit for Colombian citizens.
INCM's role in this collaboration
INCM, represented by its president Dora Moita and executive director Nuno Guerra Santos, is an institution internationally recognized for its quality and innovation. Over the years, it has invested in adhering to the highest international standards, which has made it a reliable and respected partner.
This agreement is further proof of Portugal’s commitment to the internationalization of its institutions and the promotion of long-term collaborations. The partnership not only strengthens Portugal’s presence in the global market, but also paves the way for future joint initiatives between the two countries.
The impact of this partnership
The collaboration between Portugal and Colombia is not limited to the provision of official documents. It creates a solid foundation for future economic cooperation, reinforces mutual trust and drives sustainable growth. Furthermore, by investing in the training and modernization of Colombian public services, this partnership promotes a positive and lasting social impact.
