Antunes Maciel family
The Antunes Maciel family, quite numerous in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, has its origins on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Descendants of the Sephardic Jew Sebastião de Freitas, born in the Algarve, the Antunes Maciel have their first generation in the marriage of the Portuguese Antônio Antunes and Maria Maciel.
However, before reaching the lands of Rio Grande do Sul, the Antunes Maciel family settled in State of São Paulo for several generations. The family branch that moves from São Paulo to the south of the country is the couple Francisco Rodrigues Machado and Anna Barboza Antunes Maciel. He was born in Santo Amaro (SP) and she from Sorocaba (SP).
already in the Rio Grande do Sul, Bernardo Rodrigues Antunes Maciel, son of Francisco Rodrigues Machado and Anna Barboza Antunes Maciel, marries Maria Francisco Duro, descendant of the Lopes Duro family, whose origins also go back to the State of São Paulo. Bernardo's union with Maria Francisca gave rise to numerous descendants shared by the Sephardic ascendant Sebastião de Freitas.
Over the years, the descendants of Antunes Maciel have spread throughout Rio Grande do Sul, especially by the Missions region in the northwest of the state, in addition to the municipalities of São Gabriel, Rio Pardo, Bagé, Encruzilhada do Sul, Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Saint Peter.
