How the grandchildren of Portuguese people can gain Portuguese citizenship

THE Portuguese Nationality Law (Law No. 37/81) provides that grandchildren of Portuguese people, with at least one Portuguese ancestor of 2nd degree in the straight line, are entitled to apply for Portuguese nationality, if they declare that they want to be Portuguese and have an effective connection to the national community.
According to the Regulation of the Portuguese Nationality Law, one of the requirements for the grandson's nationality application is the need to prove Portuguese nationality. This proof can be made through the birth certificate or the baptistry issued in Portugal.
The other point to pay attention to is the requirement that indicates the need to proof of connection with the Portuguese national community.
The last change introduced by the Organic Law No. 2/2020 of November 10, included the domain of Portuguese language as proof of bond. Thus, for grandchildren born in countries where Portuguese is the official language, this requirement is automatically considered satisfied.
In addition to mastering the Portuguese language, they can also constitute proof of bond other aspects such as legal residence in Portuguese territory, frequent trips to Portugal, ownership of real estate in Portuguese territory and other links with the Portuguese community. The more and more lasting bonds, the more chances the candidate for Portuguese citizenship has.
As a last essential aspect, it is important to note that the applicant's criminal record, in Portugal and in the country of origin, will also be consulted.
