Changes in sight? Proposal aims to make access to Portuguese nationality more rigid

Mudanças à vista? Proposta quer tornar mais rígido o acesso à nacionalidade portuguesa

The Liberal Initiative (IL) has included in its new electoral program a proposal that could directly impact those seeking Portuguese nationality. The party suggests:

  • Increase the minimum period of legal residence required, currently 5 years, to apply for nationality;
  • Suspend the naturalization process for people with pending criminal proceedings for intentional crimes with a sentence of more than three years.

The aim, according to the party, would be to “promote integration with legal certainty and prevent abuses”, by reformulating the nationality law with clearer and more stable criteria. The IL also criticizes what it calls the “complexity and instability” of the current rules.

Although it is still a proposal and needs to go through political debate and parliamentary approval, the simple inclusion of the topic in the electoral agenda rekindles an alert for those who have the right to Portuguese nationality, but has not yet started the process.
