Changes in sight? Proposal aims to make access to Portuguese nationality more rigid

- Increase the minimum period of legal residence required, currently 5 years, to apply for nationality;
- Suspend the naturalization process for people with pending criminal proceedings for intentional crimes with a sentence of more than three years.
The aim, according to the party, would be to “promote integration with legal certainty and prevent abuses”, by reformulating the nationality law with clearer and more stable criteria. The IL also criticizes what it calls the “complexity and instability” of the current rules.
