Collective mobilization puts pressure on the government for fair deadlines
The slowness in the analysis of Portuguese nationality applications has affected thousands of people who meet all the requirements set out in the law but still have not received a response. In light of this scenario, Martins Castro, together with specialist legal experts, presented a collective petition to the Portuguese Parliament, demanding that the legal deadlines be effectively met.
The document calls on the government to monitor the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) and take measures to ensure that citizenship is granted within the timeframe set by law — 90 working days. Currently, the delay exceeds three years in many cases, generating direct impacts on the lives of families waiting for a legitimate right.
The movement gained repercussion in the newspaper Público, reinforcing the importance of a collective mobilization to pressure for greater efficiency and respect for the rights of applicants. Read the full article on here.
