Has the new Nationality Law proposal been approved? Isabel Comte clarifies what is actually in force
In an exclusive interview, jurist Isabel Comte — a master in Law and specialist in Portuguese nationality — answers the main questions about the Portuguese government's proposal and makes an urgent appeal to those who still meet the requirements: “Apply for nationality as soon as possible.”

- Has the nationality law changed?No. What exists today is just a proposal — the law in force remains the same.
- Does the proposal affect claims from descendants of Sephardic Jews?Yes. The government wants to eliminate this route, but this has not yet been approved.
- Can someone who has been legally resident for 5 years still apply for citizenship?Yes. Until the proposal becomes law, the current criteria remain valid.
- Can the government apply the new rules retroactively?It shouldn't. Isabel classifies this part of the proposal as unconstitutional.
- What changes in the requirements of the new proposal?Longer residence time, mandatory tests and possibility of loss of nationality for serious crimes.
- How long will it take for this proposal to become law?Several months — it will still go through committees, a vote in Parliament, presidential approval and regulation.
- Is it still worth filing the application?Yes, especially for those who already meet the current requirements. The time is now.
