Nationality for spouse of Portuguese national
According to the law approved by the Portuguese Parliament, in July this year, the deadline for nationality of a spouse is 6 years, if they do not have a child in common. Married and with children do not need to wait any time. It is precisely on this point that the veto of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa falls.
For the head of state, it is “politically unfair (…) to favor couples without children, as well as, above all, couples with children, endowed with Portuguese nationality, but who are not children in common”, he says.
In his justification, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa states that the refusal of the promulgation concerns the fact that the law refers to couples with children in common, children who have Portuguese nationality, leaving out the rest. Namely those who have children not in common, or who do not have children.
