“The last step is to apply for nationality,” says Renato Martins
According to genealogical studies, more than 80% of Antioquia's population may trace their ancestry to Sephardic Jews, who migrated to the region during the Inquisition. Surnames frequently associated with this ancestry include:
- Arango
- Botero
- Street
- Jaramillo
- Londoño
- Ochoa
- Restrepo
- Serna
- Uribe
Having one of these surnames does not, in itself, guarantee citizenship, but it is the first step toward investigating family genealogy and proving ancestry. There is a proposal under consideration in the Portuguese Parliament that is expected to be voted on later this month and could close the Sephardic way. Therefore, it is necessary to act soon.

How the nationality process works
The procedure for applying for Portuguese nationality through the Sephardic route involves three main steps:
- Genealogical research – Survey of the family tree to identify the link with Sephardic ancestors.
- Community certification – The Israelite communities in Portugal analyze and validate the genealogical reports presented.
- Official request – The nationality request is forwarded to the Portuguese Ministry of Justice.
Renato Martins highlighted in the interview that this path offers legal security and official recognition of ancestry.
